The article, titled “Women serve but still second-class citizens,” highlights the paradox that American women have served — and even died — in military service for decades, yet still lack full legal equality under the Constitution. It notes specific examples of women killed in combat and then shifts to explain how current laws treat women differently than men — such as excluding women from certain hate-crime protections and from being required to register for the draft. Written by lawyer Wendy Murphy, the piece argues that it’s unjust for the government to expect women to serve and make the ultimate sacrifice without granting them equal legal status, and it connects this argument to the Equal Means Equal lawsuit that seeks to establish full constitutional equality for women.

EQUAL MEANS EQUAL Files Historic Women's Rights Lawsuit Against Donald J. Trump - Equal Means Equal

The page announces that Equal Means Equal has filed a historic women’s rights lawsuit against Donald J. Trump in federal court. The lawsuit challenges a legal strategy by a men’s rights plaintiff that attempts to use the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) in a way that could undermine constitutional protections for women — particularly around issues like draft registration. Equal Means Equal argues that this approach would distort the purpose of the ERA and weaken sex-based equality under the Constitution. The post explains why the organization filed its own lawsuit to defend a true and comprehensive interpretation of the ERA, and it highlights the significance of this case in the ongoing effort to secure full constitutional equality for women.

REVIEW & SIGN THE AMICUS BRIEF and Read EQUAL MEANS EQUAL’s Opposition Brief - Equal Means Equal

The EqualMeansEqual.org post invites supporters to review and sign the organization’s amicus brief filed in the federal lawsuit Equal Means Equal v. Donald J. Trump. It explains that EME filed its own case in Massachusetts federal court to challenge attempts by a men’s rights plaintiff to use the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) in a way that could undermine women’s legal equality — specifically around draft registration — and emphasizes why women must be the leading voice in this legal fight. The page also provides context on the legal arguments in EME’s opposition brief (arguing the ERA is valid and requires strict scrutiny review for sex discrimination) and urges organizations and individuals who support full equality under the ERA to sign onto the amicus brief before the deadline.

EME THANKS ALL OUR AWESOME AMICI - Equal Means Equal

The page on EqualMeansEqual.org expresses deep gratitude to the more than fifty organizations that quickly signed on as amici (supporting organizations) for a historic amicus brief filed in the federal lawsuit EQUAL MEANS EQUAL v. Trump on August 1, 2025. It thanks the attorneys and groups who stepped up within a tight deadline to help advocate for women’s equal rights under the law. The post also mentions that if organizations weren’t able to participate this time, there will be future opportunities — including an upcoming amicus brief when the case reaches the U.S. Supreme Court. At the end of the page, the letter from a United Nations Special Rapporteur is included, urging the U.S. to publish the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) as the 28th Amendment to the Constitution. The team shares their appreciation for support and announces that oral arguments in the case will be held in Boston federal court in September 2025.
